Executive Functioning is a set of higher-level cognitive skills associated with the frontal lobe that fully develops in early adulthood. 

  • Attention Span: The amount of time focused on a task or activity without becoming distracted.
  • Emotional Control: Noticing, evaluating, and expressing emotions in challenging situations.
  • Flexible Thinking: Adapting to new, unexpected, or changing situations by shifting thoughts and actions.
  • Impulse Control: Resisting or delaying an urge, temptation, or impulse and taking the time to consider the consequences of actions before responding.
  • Organization: Systematically arranging tasks, activities, and resources in a structured and efficient manner.
  • Perspective Taking: Seeing things from multiple viewpoints and understanding that information can be interpreted differently.
  • Planning: A structured approach that involves identifying steps, resources, and timeframes.
  • Prioritizing: The process of determining the relative importance of tasks and the order of completion (i.e., prioritizing critical & time-sensitive tasks first).
  • Self-Monitoring: Evaluating performance, personal strengths and weaknesses, necessary adjustments, and strategy modification.
  • Sequencing: The order in which events, ideas, or steps occur. 
  • Task Initiation: The ability to begin and engage in a task without unnecessary procrastination or hesitation.
  • Working Memory: Retaining and using previously learned information in real time.
